Why life is not about finding yourself

We've heard the quote "Find Yourself", and we've seen it posted on mugs and posters as an inspiration saying. But, what does "Find Yourself" really mean? Are you supposed to go searching for this "self"? And then once you find it, what happens?

People are dynamic - who we are and what we want at 17 is not the same as who we are and what we want to be at 25, 30, and beyond. Our experiences at every moment shape our behavior, wants, desires, and reality. Therefore, I don't really think life is about finding yourself, but instead, about creating yourself. To have a life you really love, you have to make it happen. You have to build the career, cultivate the relationships, represent the values you believe in and build the person you want to be.

We are all born with certain strengths and weaknesses, but despite these differences, we each have control over certain things in our lives.

  • Do you want a calmer less stressful life? You have the choice to get a less stressful job, restructure your day, or say NO to the things which clutter your life.
  • Do you want a healthier relationships? The only thing you control in this life is how you choose to react to situations, people, and difficult encounters. Start developing healthier relationships with you.
  • Do you want to be fit and healthy? You are the only person who puts certain foods into your body, and moves your body when it needs to be moved. You are the only one who can care for yourself and love yourself.

If you want to be something, you have to go after it with passion, enthusiasm, and conviction - and create it.
